This is a strong new novel from Rooney. I wasn’t a massive fan of Beautiful World (so much so I couldn’t finish it), but the characters here in Intermezzo were too uniquely crafted to let go of. The brothers at the heart of this novel are vivid and believable, and the romance, which sometimes Rooney can struggle with, is ugly and complicated and so deeply enthralling. Rooney does the unconventional so well, and this is her most unconventional novel yet.
