I originally read it with one of those pay-by-the-chapter services but I liked it so much I decided to buy it from Amazon.
Book 1 starts with Riftan and Maxi reuniting after 3 years. Riftan was away fighting against a dragon. He won against all the odds and returned to claim her. Maxi's father is a abusive monster who beat her regularly and she expects more of the same, if not worse from her knight husband. But it turns out he really loves her and cherishes her.
She is consumed with fear that he will divorce her which would probably be a death sentence. She believes this because her father filled her with self-loathing, never taught her how to be the Lady of an estate - which Riftan expects her to be, and because all the bards have filled her head with the notion that Riftan is in love with the Princess of the realm.
Book 1 ends with Riftan returning from a short visit back to the capitol to be rewarded by the king for killing the dragon.
