The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

5.0

The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories is a collection of seven short works by Charlotte Perkins Gilman; a notable activist for woman's rights who lived from 1860-1935. She was incredibly forward thinking in terms of gender roles, leaps and bounds ahead of her time. However these stories don't just work as pieces of feminist writing. They also are genuine, human stories - from the descent into madness which is The Yellow Wallpaper to the refreshingly uplifting The Cottagette, there is a lot of variety here, all well written and with different levels of interest and intrigue. The message of each story speaks clearly of Gilman's view in relation to the roles of women, and how they were perceived in the time, as well as of life in general. They can be read in any century, by any gender, and leave the reader with both the satisfaction of a well told tale and philosophical and moral questions. Highly recommended.
