Man, I've already read FAKE at least three times when I was a teenager, but I'm still sucked into going "ARRGHHHH when will they get together?"
I hadn't noticed in other volumes, but the r-slur is used (to mean something sucks), on top of all the other issues with this series. I don't think it'd be nearly as fun without the nostalgia.
