This took me such a long time to read, which is weird for an adventure novel. I do think the pacing was somewhat off, especially in the last section when Tom Sawyer appears, which really dragged for me. But overall I think this is a really smart and compassionate book, and I'm glad that I read it. I found Huck and Jim to both be so lovable, and I thought it was brilliant to look at the antebellum South through the perspective of a white child. The tween shenanigans juxtaposed against the fact that Jim is literally being torn from his family and sold as property are extremely effective, and I love the way that Twain paints a portrait of this society (his society) and its sicknesses.
