The White Dragon by Anne McCaffrey
3.0

I almost put this on the DNF pile. I did not remember the book being this meandering before. There doesn't seem to be a coherent plot or antagonist. It reads like a slice-of-life story focused on Jaxom, except Anne kept trying to inset a plot.

There were a few moments that kept me invested. Ramoth's egg being stolen could have led to something, but it never did. While it's good it didn't end in a dragon civil war, it still feels like an underutilized plot. The Oldtimers in general feel very invisible. I wish they were used more in the books, as the culture clash could have been interesting.

Ruth understanding the fire-lizards and their weird memory recollection kept coming in spurts. This should have been the main plot. Instead we have Jaxom sitting around for chapters at a time. He's unfortunately a typical teenager/young adult, bouncing between tasks and women. It was still weird that he decided to break it off with his first lover because... she was too enthusiastic, I guess?

When they finally started learning about the fire-lizards' memories and discovered stuff about the first settlers, that was when the book got good. Unfortunately, that was near the end of the book.

I will always love Pern, but next time I visit, I may skip this one.
