The comp of The Magicians meets It seems incredibly accurate. I was already a big fan of Lev Grossman so this book felt familiar. I enjoyed the differences as much as the similarities though. This story is darker and more sinister. Hamill did what not many can successfully pull off. The story jumps back and forth in time and viewpoint but feels necessary as opposed to arbitrary. It’s immersive and grips you from the start, not letting up until the very last page.
Graphic: Alcoholism, Body horror, Child death, Emotional abuse, Gore
Moderate: Addiction, Emotional abuse, Torture, Gaslighting
Minor: Child abuse, Domestic abuse, Panic attacks/disorders, Sexual content, Toxic relationship
