The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism
by Olivia Fox Cabane
This is a book which absolutely every person that wants to enhance their charisma, or become aware of the consequences of charisma, would benefit from reading. Olivia Fox Cabane not only provides the scientific background for each of her claims (in great detail, citing studies often), she also gives anecdotes, examples of application, and practical step-by-step instructions on how to achieve the various modes of charisma you can choose to embody. I think this is invaluable information and very uncommon in the realm of self-help books, where things tend to either be too far "out there" (see negative reviews for The Power of Now to see what I mean), or too focused on immediate results and practical applications without the necessary scientific background or focus on mental states.
A key takeaway from this book (to steal a favourite phrase from the author) is that charisma very much comes from within, and that in order to become (or enhance) charismatic behaviours you first need to master your internal state. This concept ties in beautifully with stoic and buddhist traditions, in fact Fox Cabane even provides exercises that draw directly upon the buddhist tradition of mindfulness.
If you've ever read stoic and/or eastern philosophy then many of the key points made by Fox Cabane will make immediate sense to you, and it might even (as in my case) make your knowledge of these concepts more concrete due to the practical implications and measurable results.
This book has a very good blend of science, philosophy, and practicality - so if you're even remotely interested in these ideas and concepts then I'd suggest this book in a heartbeat.
