Finally, a book that promises court politics and actually delivers!!! And that can show its characters being clever and intelligent, rather than simply telling us that they are, and expecting us to believe it on the strength of a few smirks.
My only criticism is that with a mesh of motivations as rich as this book truly paints, disappointingly little real conflict or consequence occurs until the last 100 pages. And in a book this long, that's a very small fraction of the reading you're doing. The rest of those pages are filled with engaging and believable characters whose stories are told at a satisfyingly slow and immersive pace, so if that + court politics is your thing (it's mine), don't sleep on this.
