Shanghai Immortal
by A.Y. Chao
Funny, Chaotic and Atmospheric.
I enjoyed this book however, I do not feel that it lived up to its premise.
Grounded in Chinese mythologies and history, the world building and scenes were beautifully described and atmospheric.
However, I found the pace never quite settled; it was slow at the start, picked up about 35% in, slowed down again and then was a sprint at the end. The story is told from the POV of main character who is 99 years old, which is basically 18 in mortal years. She is rude, crude and immature which makes for funny moments however; it means that the book reads more like a YA novel than an adult one. Her character development also happens quite late in the story which makes for a frustrating read.
The romance also felt very forced and in my opinion unbelievable.
The story ended quite abruptly with no cliffhanger; however, I believe this is the first book in a trilogy. I believe there is a lot more to explore in this world and Lady Jing’s story and so I am looking forward to completing the trilogy.
To me, the story leans towards a cosy fantasy even though there were high stakes.
