Alles umsonst by Mario Rubino, Walter Kempowski

5.0

An independent bookseller recommended this book to me and as usual with independent recommendations I wasn't disappointed.
This is a beautiful gem of a book. Harrowing at times but in a subtle way.
It shares the thoughts emotions and journeys of a host of different characters who in one way or another are connected to a grand county estate set on the edge of a town in Germany at the end of WW2 as the Russian army approaches.
It was gripping and thought-provoking to read about this aspect of the war from a German perspective and some of the mental images it conjured up will haunt me for a long time.

This is not a fast paced or plot-based book.
It is character-driven and requires careful reading and reflection but you will be well-rewarded.
