Heart of Darkness
by Joseph Conrad
university reading list has BEGUN. gonna be reading a lot of victorian literature from now this is the start. not sure if i like victorian literature we’ll find out… you could almost say it’s a journey into the heart of darkness
anyways this one was interesting. being very modernist and all it was particularly difficult to follow and so didn’t make too much of a pleasant read. the long windy dwelling sentences did occasionally make me want to go crazy (kurtz-style) but still the novel remained interesting and at times very well written
nonetheless i’m definitely keen to study this. seems to have contradiction and juxtaposition at its core - in its depiction of imperialism and in the character (or the concept) of kurtz. unsure if i fully agree with achebe’s assertion that conrad was a ‘thoroughgoing racist’ it certainly seems more complex.
now i get to watch apocalypse now! yippee!
