Jane in Love by Rachel Givney

4.0

Jane Austen, reluctant resident of 1803 Bath, England is a bit desperate. 28 years old and a nearly-confirmed spinster, the local matchmakers can't seem to find someone who is willing to overlook her poverty and quick wit. Sofia, temporary resident of 2020 Bath, England is worried. Her estranged husband is directing her in a new film, an adaptation of Northanger Abbey and she is not playing the lead, but the somewhat ridiculous chaperone. When the author of the book materializes in front of her, neither woman is prepared for what happens next.

This book was a beautiful ode to not only Jane Austen's novels but to the woman herself. The author really captured to many aspects of Austen that are often overlooked: her quick wit, her sharp tongue, her love of family. She takes a historical figure and gives her life and flesh and feelings, which I just thought was beautiful. Sofia's story was lovely - I enjoyed how she grew both as a person and as an actress throughout the book. I adored the relationship between Jane and Sofia - how they edified and fought for one another. And Fred. Fred was wonderful and lovely and perfect. The ending made me cry, even though it was the right ending for the book. If you love Jane Austen, you should read this book.
