Traumatised but still loved
Both Vark and Hazel have been through it. Hazel is on the run from her old gang with her daughter when she hops in a wagon heading out the city, Vark's wagon. Vark is our scared orc from book 1 and I'm so glad he gets his happily ever after. He suffers with depression since he lost his eye. He knows Hazel is his mate but he doesn't feel like he deserves her. Hazel is untrusting after what she went through with her old gang (which could have been explained a little more) and takes a while to warm up to the orcs but I like the progression of their relationship. I don't know if it was slow burn or if it's just that I didn't pick it up for 3 days in the middle. Wren was a sweet and precocious kid but the her plot twist was unnecessary. It cute but what was the point. It did get to a point where she would be taken care of by the rest of the group so her mama could hook up with Vark in the cold river. It was too smutty for single parent.
