The Buy Nothing, Get Everything Plan: Discover the Joy of Spending Less, Sharing More, and Living Generously by Liesl Clark, Rebecca Rockefeller

hopeful informative inspiring medium-paced

3.5

I love the Buy Nothing Project, and it really has changed my life and the way my family thinks about stuff.  I have begun to trust that if I give something away and later need it, I will be able to make do or find it in my community.

A couple issues I had with the book:
1. They went way too in-depth into some things that weren't necessary.  There are thousands of recipes for salad dressing, yogurt, and household cleaners on the internet.  Just mention that you can make some of your own staples and encourage people to search the internet for instructions.
2. It can read as very pretentious.  Clearly, Liesl and her husband are very accomplished, but regularly mentioning how often Liesl and her family travel to Nepal or that her husband is a climber who entered a cave no human has been in over 700 years is not only unnecessary, but makes what they're saying feel out of reach to normal people.

With all that said, I do hope people will read this book or look into the Buy Nothing Project and figure out how they can join or start a gifting community in their neighborhood.  Giving begets giving and it's better for our communities and the environment when people share more freely with each other rather than holding on to things "just in case."
