This is a reread for me 15-16 yrs after reading it. Enjoyed because Any Tan but not her best. It feels like there needs to be more to Winnie’s character development from the main story to the frame story of now. I also found the narrative to be more “ what horrible stuff happened part 1, part 2, part 3, etc. rather a more narratively interesting. I also feel like Pearl wasn’t really developed beyond her chronic illness and difficulty relating to her mom
