Readers of the series should like this book, but I would not recommend it to someone who has not read at least the first book. Personally I liked this one as much as the first book in the series, and much better than the second book. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator does an excellent job giving the characters their own voices and even accents.
The series will appeal to people who like magic and adventure fantasy (in a slightly more modern setting). At times you will have elements of Victorian England, but not enough to consider this Steampunk. This is Young Adult but not childish. The characters are well developed and grow throughout the series.
