Piece by Piece: The Story of Nisrin's Hijab by Priya Huq

4.0

This graphic novel immediately plunges you into Nisrin's story, and part of that means the narrative assuming the audience is already familiar to a degree with Islam and the context of 2002, which I love. The rich colors of the illustrations keep the eye trained on the characters' emotions, which lets Huq cut some corners with the words. I immediately understood (and identified with) the family dynamics in play, and everything works together to show how Nisrin is struggling to establish a place for herself where she's in control and others respect and love her. I'm so glad a professor recommended this book to me earlier this year, and that my library just got a copy in.
