The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury
4.0

I had never read an Aladdin retelling before, I had such a pleasurable time reading this one. I found it original, intriguing and beautifully unique. I enjoyed the fact the book focused on the Jinni and her point of view, I think it took it to a whole new level, making it unique. Zahra's determination is what makes her so charming to me, in fact, women in this book are portrayed as such strong characters (which by the way I love it) like Zahra, we have Caspida, and even Watchmaidens ( through centuries had an important role/mission).

However, all credits must be given to Aladdin character, I was amazed by is mischievous, humorous and bold character. How he used words keenly and seductively at times.

"you can't choose what happens to you, but you can choose who you become because of it"

Their relationship, and the whole forbidden love aspect is what kept me captivated. Through the book we get to see Zahra not as the monster she tries to convince she is but as a girl falling in love.

"It was a fluke, an accident, I tell myself. It won't happen again. Still, I feel every inch of space between us as we walk, and I wonder if he feels it too."

Why I couldn't give it 5 stars rating? The book was a bit slow pace at the beginning, the stalling action wasn't relevant to the story nor added much to it. Plus I wish her powers, were more explored through the book and not just at the last minute chapters. Like in the synopsis she is consider one of the most powerful Jinnis yet not much was given to us. But I have to give credit to Jessica Khoury for the originality of the last fight between Zahra and the King of Jinnis.

I would recommend this book for sure, I certainly had an magical time with this fairytale retelling.
Even a thief may have honor, and even a jinni may have a heart

I think this quote is the perfect sum up of what this book as to offer.
