The Nakano Thrift Shop
by Hiromi Kawakami
This is the second Hiromi Kawakami book that I have read, and I was looking forward to it as I thoroughly enjoyed Strange Weather in Tokyo. Much like that book, everything in it feels slightly restrained, including the writing. I have been reading a few Asian novels, (including other Japanese novels), and I feel that there is a similar style in the writing and the characterisation. However the more I think about it the more difficult I find it to articulate what it is about this book that is different.
There is not a huge amount of plot in the book - it follows the lives of the owner and staff of the Nakano Thrift Shop and each chapter is related to an item that is brought into the shop. The owner, a bit of a lothario who is on wife #3 and has at least 2 mistresses throughout the book, his sister who provides advice and guidance along with her own love affair, and then finally Hitomi and Takeo, the part time staff who begin an on-again off-again love affair.
To be honest I would probably give this a 3.5⭐️ rounded up because, although it did not blow my socks off, it was an enjoyable couple of hours.
