Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn is the second book in The Legendborn Cycle series, and the action starts at the very first chapter! The author brings it all out with her highly bingeable writing style and vivid world-building, which is the best part of this book.
I love that weโre seeing some of the plot threads that were planted in the first book blooming into exciting scenarios in this one. The story has really expanded, and the Legendborns are now just one piece of a highly intricate world. I so love the different kinds of magic introduced into the story, and of course, the deeper themes of how racism and prejudice have played out and created the system all the characters are in.
All the things that made the first book so special in my eyes are still in Bloodmarked; however, there are some issues that I couldnโt get past that prevent me from giving this a solid 5 stars.
One is that I feel Bree is so overpowered. Sheโs turning into the specialest girl that ever specialed. Maybe itโs all the years Iโve read fanfiction that Iโve become hyperaware when the main characters are being over-the-top favored by the author. This, unfortunately, made me predict the plot twist at the end, and I cringed a little, not gonna lie.
Iโm also not that into the love triangle, or maybe just Sel as a love interest. I donโt see the appeal or why Breeโs falling for him โ honestly, heโs kind of a jerk most of the time, and the moments of vulnerability donโt make up for or excuse it. Plus, the distrust of Nick, after all he went through, isโฆweird.
I also need more from the secondary characters, more personality and fleshing out, please!
Overall, this is a great YA Fantasy book thatโs better and worse in parts than the first one, but still a highly recommended read.
Iโm stalling with picking up Outhbound until the fourth (and hopefully last) book is out!
