Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

adventurous emotional relaxing medium-paced

4.5

Casiopea Tun discovers a chest in her grandfather's bedroom containing the bones of the Lord of Death, betrayed by his verh brother. When the ancient god enlists her help to regain his title, Casiopea learns about the world and what life is like away from her horrible family.

I thought this was absolutely ingenius - a page turner from start to finish. I read Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and was a bit apprehensive about reading this book as I was afraid it was her writing style I didn't vibe with - turns out, that's not the case at all.

I don't even know where to begin when it comes to reviewing this book, I'll be completely honest with you. I loved the dynamic between Casiopea and Hun-Kamé, how their banter grew the more human he became, and the more time he spent with her. And the beach scene had me kicking my feet and twirling my hair. I haven't read something quite as romantic as that in a long time.

Though I was screaming at Casiopea for some of the choices she made, I genuinely believe they were the right ones, however heartbreaking they turned out to be. As a result of this, I truly find myself satisfied with the ending. Was the ending predictable? Somewhat. As I learned with This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron, young adults novels, for me, end up being cozy novels where I can somewhat guess the ending and am usually correct. Even so, this was insanely enjoyable and I will pick it up again the next time I want something sweet and wholesome.
