The Blackhouse by Peter May

4.0

This book was very good.

I love a great and atmospheric mystery/detective fiction and The Blackhouse definitely delivered.

The book was much more character driven than I anticipated, the story following detective Fin MacLeod as he travels back to the Isle of Lewis where he is from to invesitgate a murder. It flips back and forth between present day and memories from Fin's past all leading up to uncovering the identity of the murderer.

The final unraveling of the 'who-done-it' and why was really well done and quite emotional.

There were a few instances where I felt the scenes from Fin's past meandered a bit too much and I scanned the page but honestly that was probably just my impatience as I was nearing the end.

I can't say many of the characters from Fin's life were likeable, they were all a bit tragic, their pasts and presents tragic as well, but that did lend itself to the bleakness of the setting, a character itself.

Really good story.
