To all the Black boys who had to grow up too early
— Dedication, p. v

jesus fucking christ this HURT

i knew there would be heartbreak reading this and i still wasn’t prepared… the love these two little brothers had for each other felt so real and so pure. and for it to end up the way it did because of someone’s assumptions racism? absolutely devastating.

Joy in the face of oppression is its own kind of bravery, but so is sitting in front of the thing that scares you, and not running.
— Chapter 15, p. 315

sometimes the future can be changed but sometimes it can’t. tragic and brilliantly written.
