This book is complex for me. It appealed to the teenager within but it definitely has a lot of adult things in it as well. It’s marketed to shadow and bone lovers- disagree wholeheartedly. This is a fantasy slow burn romance where both characters have equal stake; there is no manipulation as there is with Alina and Darkling…. So, fans of that, maybe this is a no for you.
I will say I have some criticisms as to why certain plot points were glazed over - like we were just told certain things. I would have liked more time in some parts and less time in others- I can tell it’s a debut novel but, nonetheless, I still really enjoyed it and look forward to reading the second book. Like, I genuinely wanted to keep reading- and that’s not always the case. There is enough that the author left me hooked on. I love our main girl (chefs kiss with her) and ya know what, I even love our main boy (double chefs kiss). There is the stereotypical “straight people don’t communicate” trope but for this novel it makes WAY more sense so I overlooked that. I look forward to seeing this author mature in her writing. The concept of the hurricane wars and the authors note at the beginning are brilliant and I hope to see more of it with the impending event … ;)
