The Snowdonia Killings by Simon McCleave
5.0
I have not read a detective novel in a long time where characters are more than just police officers or detectives. I did not expect [b:The Snowdonia Killings|50243810|The Snowdonia Killings|Simon McCleave|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1577921264l/50243810._SY75_.jpg|74516366] to be that book, and I was pleasantly surprised at what I'd found.

From the first few pages I was very invested in both Ruth and Nick. They were characters I could really start to care about from the beginning, and they weren't only their work. I screamed internally whenever Nick took another drink or refused to curb his alcoholism, and cheered at the point when Ruth and Nick finally regarded each other as friends.
I was also very invested in the mystery aspect of the story, something I can't completely say of other books I've read this month. I formed firm ideas about the suspects and was able to tell where twists were coming. Even so, I was still shocked at the ending.
That's the kind of story I like to read, something with so many plot twists and yet no cliffhanger ending. And through all of that, characters you really want to know more about. I thoroughly loved this, and when I finished, I was gifted with a surprise copy of the prequel, which is free on the author's website. I will read that soon, since it is very short (or maybe I was only given one chapter, I can't tell and GR doesn't list a page count). This was so good and not at all what I expected.
