Origin by Dan Brown
3.0

(I spoil the whole thing below, so don't read this unless you've read the book.)

We all knew Edmond was going to die before he shared his discovery with the world. It was obvious from the tone of things, so it was really annoying that so many things "had to happen" before he got assassinated. It was so much of being strung along that you get kind of bored (sorry for the morbidness) of waiting for him to get killed. Also pretty disappointed with Robert this time. I mean - for a man who's had so many near-misses with death as well as impossible situations, he sure is a frustrating skeptic with no self-preservation skills. It's seriously all luck.

Anyway, I love how this describes the sculptures in the Guggenheim. I always enjoy these in Dan Brown's books - wanting to look up places or things unfamiliar to you. The AI speaker was a mini mindblowing thing tho, ngl.

I feel like there were way too many cliffhangers in this book. Too much intrigue and trying to make us anticipate the release - at some point you get a little annoyed. I honestly did not understand the chapters with Julian in it - it was adding nothing to the story because I could care less about them, tbh. It felt like unecessary filler. Even after finding out his dad and Valdespino were gay... well. Maybe it's been done before because it wasn't a big deal to me. Kind of like ah, okay. Not so deserving of all those secretive chapters.

Honestly, kind of meh overall, despite all the anticipation. Winston being both Monte /and/ the Regent, I had a feeling, like midway. I mean, usually, Dan Brown would have POVs of all the pertinent characters, and the Monte person never came up. And yet that person seemed to know /way/ too much, so I was like... what if it was Winston, trying to fan the flames, so to speak? Thinking it was the best way? Winston is a brilliant AI, but perhaps too brilliant, too helpful, too calm, after all. There had to be a twist.

It was fun, finding out I was right hahaha. Also kind of scary, and almost touches on "how if robots took over the world" sort of thing. Freaky.

Overall I missed out on the usual insane and exhilarating plot twists I find when I read Dan Brown's books. I'm still down for the next book though, haha, since I've read all his books except Inferno (which I don't really want to read because someone's spoiled me on the ending and... well I've watched the movie).
