We read this book in my Khartoum book group, and I actually enjoyed it, while others in the group had a quite vehement negative reaction to it. I thought the tone was a bit like a younger Salman Rushdie, and some of the scenes were quite funny, although I recognize it might be a bit vulgar for some people's tastes, and the theme (a poor Indian chauffeur who ends up killing his employer) is quite dark. But it makes you think about how you treat people and how they view you because of it.
