Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi

2.0

2 stars -- so i respect how cool choi's authorial voice is, and how this book successfully tackles topics like poverty and racism.

however, i found the treatment of
Spoilerpenny's sexual assault
to be.... kind of shitty. i felt like it wasn't treated with the same time and attention that other heavy topics, like sam's money problems, sam's abusive mother, and penny's relationship with her mother, were treated with. i also have a major pet peeve about a character revealing that about themselves for a ~~PLOT TWIST~~. and overall it was written in a very cliché way.
Spoilerpenny literally asks sam, "do you think i'm broken?" like fuck off honestly.

i felt very little connection to the characters -- the narration is awkward at times and keeps you at arm's length, and not in a good way. also, this took me f o r e v e r to read: 5 days, while not reading anything else, which is a long time for me personally to finish something. i think it was because after that crappy scene, i dreaded picking it back up and didn't want to finish. maybe with the right reader, this would be a hit, but for me, emergency contact left a bad taste in my mouth.
