Excellent world-building, rich characterization, and a queer relationship that feels authentic and safe to be in.
I was scared the whole time that they would be outed in a way that made it part of the plot, but they were not. This let the main story tension be about the mystery and their feelings, without homophobic violence.
I'm very happy with this author, and it feels like a gift of queer joy without the feeling of pandering or unattainability.
The foreshadowing is also very well done, where the twists and turns of the mystery feel gratifying and revealing. I cant wait to read more from this author.

Graphic: Bullying, Abandonment, and Emotional abuse
One character has an abyssmal family life that is not overtly horrific, but felt triggering as a queer person.
It did not come off as exploitative, and I felt some catharsis as the characters dealt with it.
