A Marvelous Light was a good beginning story to what seems like will be a pretty good series. The characters were well written even though their relationship seemed a little under-developed for the amount of time they actually spend together. The writing was, for the most part, very well done although I found the romantic scenes to kind of drag on a bit without actually adding much to the story. The world building was interesting and definitely made a unique magic system, but uniqueness doesn't always equate to "interesting". The mystery plot felt like it was playing second-fiddle to the romance for 80% of the book and everything was just kind of... revealed at the end without much actual build up or real "mystery solving". All in all, the good parts of this book were good-to-average, and the bad parts weren't actually all that bad, just a little longwinded and wish fulfilment-y. I think I will give the others in the series a go, I am actually really intrigued about the next book since it seems like it might focus on different characters, but it's certainly not jumping to the top of my list or anything.
