A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

4.0

This is the first novel by V E Schwab that I’ve read and I can honestly say that it more than stood up to the praise I’ve heard from so many readers. There was so much good stuff to be found in this novel:

- magic, rare magic at that
- four worlds, separate, but akin
- plenty of twists and turns to obstruct the paths of the main characters
- well-written dialogue
- memorable details such as Kell’s coat that turns into a multitude of coats

A darker shade of magic is a highly imaginative read. My only criticism is that I didn’t find myself caring about the main characters until I was around a third of the way into the novel.

I’m so glad this is the first of a series. I know what I’ll be buying with my Christmas book money.
