Wicked Fox by Kat Cho

I don’t know... I liked the setting and the world built here very much. The characters, not so much.

It’s not very insta-love but the way Miyoung and Jihoon fell for each other is a bit cliche and totally expected. I basically skipped all the parts where they were pining for each other. And the whole kiss scene. Hmmm.

Miyoung’s relationship with Yena is so boring in the beginning. But it does get better until the author decides to KILL HER OFF :/ Yena also is probably one of the most interesting characters - having lived for so long - so it’s infuriating that not much is spent on her backstory. (Although now that I think of it, the random interludes talking about gumiho folklore might actually be Yena telling them to her daughter).
Jihoon’s relationship with his mum is also intriguing and very emotional.

I liked the idea behind this book but not so much the execution. It’s slow, draggy and the characters aren’t that great. On the plus side, it’s amazing that there’s a whole YA book about Korean teens and folklore. The culture is also nicely explained instead of being chunks of info dumps. Warning: do not read on an empty stomach; this book just really made me crave Korean food.
