Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente

4.0

3,5 stars. This book really grew on me. First I almost didn't read past the first chapter, as the prose was so all over the place and so desperately wanting to have been written by Douglas Addams, but I decided to continue as the concept of Eurovision in space was so delicious. And then, all the digressions started to slowly feed each other and formed a coherent picture. Even though some of the side notes felt a bit tedious, there was a general sense of direction and even suspense throughout the novel. In the end the reading experience ended up being like spending a pub night with the weirdest and most wonderful of your acquaintances all talking on top of each other: by the end of the night you can't really list all the topics covered, but a wonderful time was had by all.
