Dandelions by Yasunari Kawabata

5.0

Dandelions is the unfinished enigma of Kawabata's collected works, equally blessed as the finality of his death curses it.

It is like a blurry photograph whose streaked colors and lack of clarity call to mind the hands gripping the camera, even though they are not in the frame. If Kawabata had been able to retake and recompose the image of Dandelions, we would have been left with a sharper, more focused image, but it would not have radiated the same raw, vibrant warmth.

"They turned back toward the hill and raised their eyes. The tolling seemed to come from the sky, and stay in the sky. A temple in a country town like this one was unlikely to have a large and celebrated bell, but it was probably old enough."
