9 out of 5! This might be the best book I have ever read. If not, it’s only because The Book of Leaves has made an appearance in my current narrative.
At the same time, I hesitate to recommend this book to most people.
If you read for the destination, rather than the travel, this might not be the book for you.
This book feels like the best parts of Tolkien’s works, Nabokov’s writing, George Eliot’s masterpiece, an 11th century how-to book on monasteries and convents, and post-graduate textbooks on theoretical physics and philosophy. I feel like my thoughts expanded nearly every time I read more of this book. There is no shortage of plot, characters, or relationships, despite all the space taken up my mathematics, logic, science, linguistics, and speculation.
Maybe it *is* the best book I have ever read.
I’m not sure whether you would like it, though.
I’m thinking I might have a new favorite author, too.
