The Times I Knew I Was Gay
by Eleanor Crewes
The times I knew I was gay:
Age 8: My second summer at a sleepaway with all girls (dear Lord). I met a girl with whom I was absolutely obsessed. Every letter I sent home to my parents just relayed how cool I thought she was, and the next summer, when she promptly ignored me, I didn't know why the rejection felt so strange.
Age 10: Had my first and only boyfriend. Broke up with my first and only boyfriend because his hands were "too sweaty" (I regret telling this to his face). Later, I played FMK with my best friend at the time and had to choose between my best friend and her brother. I wanted to choose to marry her, but knew that if I did, it would hinder our friendship. It did.
Age 11: I wanted to impress a girl in my geography class by cracking my knuckles (even though I had never cracked my knuckles before). I messed up a tendon in my left middle finger so badly that it still clicks out of place to this day. Girl was not impressed. Was way too embarrassed to tell my dad just why I had accidentally injured myself.
Age 12: Watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time. I got through all seven seasons in three weeks, and found myself re-watching the episode where Faith and Buffy swap bodies "for the plot" and not for the fact that Faith-inhabiting-Buffy's-body decides that the first thing she wants to do in her new body is to masturbate... Made my best friend and crush at the time watch the Buffy musical episode (the one "coincidentally" showing magical lesbian sex between Willow and Tara) to "gauge her reaction." Her heterosexuality affirmed, and our friendship ruined. Started dating a friend from North Carolina that I had met on Tumblr through our Percy Jackson blogs (gayest thing I have ever said). Was still only out as bisexual.
Age 13: Broke up with Tumblr girlfriend and promptly started seeing a new girl just so I could kiss someone. Didn't feel anything when we kissed, broke up with her, and swiftly went back into the closet.
Age 14: Realized that liking when men consider me intelligent is not the same as liking men. Came out as a lesbian.

I won it in a Goodreads giveaway, and I'm grateful for the chance to have read it. I think it would be great for any baby gays. Trigger warning, when reading, for eating disorders.
