Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
5.0

Having just finished George R. R. Martin's "A Clash of Kings", I was looking for something lighthearted and entertaining. Definitely found what I was looking for in Derek Landy's Skulduggery Pleasant.

It's not every day that one has the pleasure to meet a reanimated skeleton named Skulduggery Pleasant. But with the unfortunate passing of her Uncle Gordon, that is just the kind of predicament twelve-year-old Stephanie finds herself in. Believing her Uncle to have been protecting something of vital importance - something that might possibly have been left in Stephanie's care after her Uncle's passing - Pleasant whisks her away from her hum-drum life in order to unravel the mystery that surrounds her Uncle's death, and in doing so opens the door to a world of magic that is being threatened by an old nemesis: Nefarian Serpine (ooh, doesn't the name send chills down your spine? What an EVIL name! :P).

Stephanie is a head-strong young girl with a thirst for adventure. Nothing Skulduggery says can persuade her to stay away from the dark and dangerous world of magic. Not that he would have it any other way, of course, as he rather likes Stephanie's annoying habit of Not Doing What She's Told. The banter between the two is often side-splitting, pleasantly witty. The plot is delightfully simple, lacking in twists and turns and all of that kind of fuzzy stuff that clouds your noggin'. It's just some good ol' fashion story telling - no gimmicks!

Would definitely recommend this if you want something simple and lighthearted. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series!
