The Leftover Woman by Jean Kwok
2.0

I liked the concept of this book but it was so frustrating to read! I did appreciate the depth that the author went into about China’s one child policy. I knew little about it and I felt that the explanations really added to the entirety of the story.

However, I had trouble keeping up with the timeline between the characters because they weren’t quite in sync but weren’t far enough in the past to be that noticeable either. It came off like someone wasn’t paying attention to detail rather than having it be pertinent to the storyline. The two main characters were the overly stereotyped versions of their races, which I guess was the point, but again was super frustrating to read. A few of the situations made no sense at all (running into a childhood friend coincidentally in one of the biggest cities in the US, working so hard to find your child and then just leaving???). I wanted to much to love this story but I just couldn’t get behind it.
