As my first ever dark romance, I’m honestly shocked I liked this so much. The opening chapter is so gripping and written so well I was desperate to know the secrets of Dracadia island. Fueled by my love of gothic and academia literature, I dove straight into this and quickly found myself constantly wanting to go back to it.

I really like Lilia, which I find can always be a hit or miss with romance-centered FMCs. She’s complicated, dark, and has a resilience that so wonderfully feminine. And although I sometimes rolled my eyes a bit with the MMC, I still found him likable and a good match for Lilia.

So much of this book is about addressing guilt and shame and allowing yourself the space to heal. Allowing yourself good things because love and grief go hand in hand.

I felt this was a dark romance in the way it’s supposed to be. The FMC and MMC are respectful of each other’s boundaries. Neither exerts full control over the either, it’s not toxic, there’s no assault, and they both heal something broken within the other.

This is one I could definitely read again, and I think I had made me a fan of Keri Lake.
