DESCRIPTION

Sharon McMahon is America’s favorite government teacher. She runs a governerds book club that is awesome. In this book, she tells the story of ordinary Americans whose actions truly made America great, even if you have never heard of them. McMahon focuses on a Virginia woman who opened multiple schools for black children in post Civil War Virginia to a professor and poet central to opening education positions to women to women teaching on the American frontier. She tells the story of Rosa Parks and her predecessors who started the montgomery Bus Boycott. She profiles Daniel Inouye and Norman Mineta, who were victims of discrimination against the Japanese in WWII yet fought and nearly died for their country (Inouye) and then served in Congress and as transportation secretary.  In this book Sharon McMahon shows that Americans who make their country great do not always appear in the history books. Her gift for storytelling truly demonstrates that history is a series of stories and that ordinary individuals can effect change and inspire actions that make our country more just and free. This was an excellent book to read during the election.
