I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly Lemming
adventurous
funny
medium-paced
3.0
What in the actual fuck?
Fans of Kimberly Lemming know going in to expect some quirky, out there stuff but this was beyond anything she’s written before. To the point that I’d say much of this, especially the first 60% was a big mess. There were definitely moments of fun and her voice is still very apparent throughout but this really needs better balance and focus. I know she went into the pitch to the publisher giving them the whackiest things she could think of and they went for it but come on! Usually when an indie author gets picked up by a major publisher you expect MORE polish not less.
This was so messy it was actually boring because I couldn’t keep track of all the new things she threw my way that I really stopped caring. And the central why choose romance was extremely lacking. The use of a love serum made it insta love and insta lust and they jumped into sex immediately and did very little else. The two male leads in this were completely undeveloped, especially Sol, and I honestly didn’t care about them. The villain (who didn’t appear until the last 30%) was better developed and had a deeper backstory and more obvious POV than either love interest. You can tell he’s the mc for the next in the series so at least he’s set up now.
Honestly this had fun points and I liked the back half but it really barely skates through at three stars. There is just way too much going on and little to no plot. Also it wasn’t exactly original as it follows the formula for almost every ‘mars needs women’ alien romance books. Toto the talking lion was my favourite and was the main reason I did not DNF this.
If you like whacky stories with lots and lots of descriptive MMF sex scenes maybe you’ll like this. I just found it overall needed better development and think Berkley really needs called out for failing Lemming so badly here. Her Mead Mishaps series is a much better offering and I look forward to more from it. This series is a miss for me.
