The Rise of Flynn Rider by Jen Calonita
4.0

Ever since Frozen came out it feels like that story gets all the attention and that Tangles is forgotten about. However, an entire generation of young women has grown up with a huge crush on Flynn Rider and I myself also have a weak spot for this thief. When I saw that Calonita was gonna write him an origin story I immediately added the book to the wish list and last week, when opening a bookswap, I could finally hold it in my hands to read.

Since there's quite a gap between this book and Tangled it's a little doubtful if we can really call this an origin story. It's clear there are a few steps between how this books ends and how Tangled begins. However, this book does bring us back to our beloved Kingdom and tells us who Flynn actually is, how he ended up adopting his favorite fictional hero's name and how he learned everything about thieving and stealing valuable objects.

Along the way we meet loads of familiar faces and we visit loads of familiar places. We already meet a lot of the guys Rapunzel runs into at the Ugly Duckling, just like there even is a brief scene set at the Ugly Duckling already, including the secret route to escape. Of course we also see where the feud between Flynn and the brothers actually started, and it's clear they go way back. And even my favorite horse in the universe makes a small guest appearance.

Although this book is in every possible way an adventure perfectly suitable for kids, it's also a lovely read for the more grown up kids among us. Of course, the book deals with thieves, but it also contains a moral lesson on what's right and wrong. And most of all, the book teaches us all about friendship and how water can be thicker than blood. It's quite clear in this book that Flynn, or Eugene, never was a true criminal. He just needs Rapunzel to help him get back on track.
