The first pages of this book broke my heart. I immediately knew I had to keep reading, and I didn’t stop until I finished it the same day.
On the surface, this is a story about a forbidden relationship between a teacher (30) and his student (18). But as you read, you realize it’s so much more than that. For me, it was a study in loss, grief, and healing.
The people around you can influence you, impact your decisions, and shape who you are. But that is nothing compared to what they can do to you when they leave. I love how this is so clearly written here, how easy it is to feel the pain of loss alongside the characters.
This is the third book I have read by C.P. Harris, and I can see how they are experts at writing emotions that pull at your heartstrings.
I didn’t love the ending as much because it felt a bit corny and overly fluffy, but it’s the happy ending these boys needed.
Also, philosophy is close to my heart. I wish the author had taken the time to immerse themselves in it a little more before writing the book. Many of the discussions read like Philosophy for Dummies. I did my best to overlook those and focused on the characters instead.
Graphic: Cancer, Suicide, Terminal illness, and Death of parent
Moderate: Child death
