Prisoners of the Castle: An Epic Story of Survival and Escape from Colditz, the Nazis' Fortress Prison by Ben Macintyre

5.0

This is probably as good as it gets (or will get) in terms of Colditz narratives. Taking great pains with a seemingly endless trove of written archival material and audio recordings as his research basis, Macintyre lays out the history of the castle that was turned into a supposedly escape-proof POW camp during WW2. He pulls information from first-hand accounts of the prisoners who tried (and some who succeeded) in escaping, as well as of the guards and leadership who tried (and mostly succeeded) in keeping the prisoners from escaping. Excellent book.
