I have to admit, I think this book dragged on slightly. It took a while for me to emotionally connect to either Carly or Kassam, probably because in lieu of character building at the opening of the novel, we got a lot of repetitive scenes of everyone losing their minds with lust about Kassam due to
his curse of hedonism.
I honestly felt like a solid half of the intro could have been cut and the story would have moved forward a lot more smoothly, and I wouldn't have had the bitter taste in my mouth going forward because of the foundation of dubious consent present in the relationship.

I did enjoy that Kassam was very much inhuman, that he and his godly ilk were very much so othered from humanity in terms of their ability to empathize with mortal plights and their pretty absolute power, as well as with regard to, like, being bound by their godly domains and by the vows they make. It was very "fey as they should be" to me and quite fun to read. Working through that was an important aspect of his arc, and made his relationship with Carly one I could actually root for, and made the ending satisfying. For her part, I enjoyed Carly well at the start, when she wasn't mentally bamboozled. Her quick-wittedness and clever thinking with regard to protecting herself from Kassam's curse made me like her a lot, though I wasn't as big a fan of her decision to
sacrifice herself for Kassam if it came to it
, especially because she'd been so pragmatic until that point. The point was for Kassam to realize he's not better than those who worship him, so why undercut that lesson by
flat out saying that your mortal life is nothing in comparison to him being worshiped and etc.
? Especially since usually, Carly was really put out when things came up that made it seem as though Kassam thought he was above her.

Regardless, the story was still fun, if long, and I enjoyed it as an intro to this Ruby Dixon series.
