I enjoyed the plot and Roman allusions, the setting is simultaneously old and futuristic which I think is cool. But I do feel weird about the role of female characters in the book and also the use of rape as a plot device. Darrow believes it’s evil but also the rapists in the book are allies and redeemable, nuanced characters when the victims are forgotten, if they’re even named. I can’t put my finger on exactly what isn’t sitting right with me but even the important female characters feel pretty 1 dimensional.
