Are You Afraid of the Dark?
by Sidney Sheldon
Okay. What was this book? It was ridiculous. I wanted to read action, car chases, gunshots and pew-pew. But like, this was underwhelming.
There was no tension, no plot just vibes and luck. And the characters were two dimensional as hell. If I ever read, "i will get them bitches" one more time in any other way possible, I will literally throw this book into the ocean. And the "partner" thing got stale pretty quickly. Plus describing each woman as attractive isn't a description at all. Like, I get it that you're a little sexist but like what about how short her dress was, how about her sultry lips or her body. There was literally no elaborate description for the characters- they were underwritten.
The voices are hard to tell apart as well. Diane and Kelly sound the same most of the time. Plus, how stupid are these women supposed to be? How are we supposed to root for them when they go shopping for four suitcases worth of clothes when they're supposed to be on the run? It was super unrealistic and kinda screamed, "I don't know anything about women except that they value clothes and men."
Giving someone an abusive past (Kelly and Lois) does not give them character. Also, people don't usually react to their partners' deaths by thinking about how they got laid well when the said partner was alive? Plus if Diane comes from money, why does she never contact her parents for help? There are so many plot holes. The worst part was how the plot made every getaway so convenient and easily done. There was no thrill to speak of. At all.
In conclusion, I do not appreciate all the women in the story being portrayed as shallow and simple minded with no complex thoughts or the capability to escape only due to sheer dumb luck. (The characters in the smut I read have more dimensions than Diane and Kelly.)
One star for the attempted female friendship and the abuse Tanner inflicted upon his brother because that made me hate him and I consider it good writing if you can get me to hate the villain. Also, Go Andrew- slayyyy- iykyk.
