Machinal by Sophie Treadwell

5.0

"- Suppose the machine shouldn't work!
- It'll work! - It always works!"

It baffles me that this play was first performed in 1931. It is definitely a product of its time, but feels so avant garde and new in how it's written. I think beyond being a good play, it has great literary value with Treadwell as a masterful writer. The way it ties together the pressures of the capitalistic, machine-like world along with the heteronormative expectations from a woman of the times is impeccable, and allows for a very tight structure. It's a simple plot, but artfully rendered.
