Our Crooked Hearts by Melissa Albert
4.0

3.5 stars rounded up. This was a fun, atmospheric, creepy, witchy read. Ivy is riding home with her boyfriend, when something darts in front of the car. He swerves; and they go off the road. There are no damages to the car, and except for Ivy colliding with the dash, she is fine. They get out of the car to see what caused them to go off the road. They find a nude girl in the water. She seems unhurt, so Ivy gives her a shirt she’s wearing. Then, Ivy and her boyfriend drive home, where she dumps him. The story weaves back and forth in time between Ivy’s present day and Ivy’s mom, Dana’s, teenage years. Of course, some weird things start to occur in Ivy’s life. Ivy finds out that her mom is probably a witch, and Dana’s story tells the backstory of what she and her friends did. As the story moves along, you start to understand how what happened back then is affecting Ivy’s now. I found this story engaging from the first chapter. Also, I did go back and forth between reading and listening. I actually enjoyed reading this book more than the narration. Dana’s narration was very low and hard to hear at times, while Ivy’s character was practically shouting. If you get the choice, pick up the book. Overall, a fun read.
